FAQs Regarding COVID-19 Enhanced Biosecurity Potocols

To safeguard your health and wellbeing Maui Grown Therapies is adjusting its dispensary operations to meet or exceed COVID-19 biosecurity guidelines issued by public health officials.

Authorities are urging ‘social distancing’ by maintaining a physical distance of at least six feet from others. Maui Grown Therapies has implemented new systems to ensure that patient-to-patient and staff-to patient interactions are limited.  As events unfold, we will adjust our procedures to comply with guidance from government health officials and our Science and Medical Advisory Board.

Will medical cannabis dispensaries be forced to close if more restrictions are enforced by government officials?
On March 23, 2020, Governor Ige proclaimed licensed medical cannabis facilties as essential business services in the state of Hawai`i and, as such, dipensaries are expected to continue serving qualified patients.

Travel to, and from, essential medical services is exempt from the governor stay-at-home order. However, those under mandatory quarantine may not enter the dispensary until their required quarantine period has ended. Effective March 25, all new arrivals to Maui, including returning residents, are subject to a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

Will you be able to maintain a consistent supply of products?
MGT will continue to supply the needs of qualifying patients as long as mandatory state-certified independent labs remain available to test our flowers and manufactured products.

Will Maui Grown Therapies be reducing its operating hours?
No. In fact, hours have been extended to accomodate MGT’s enhanced biosecurity requirements. We will continue to adjust business hours as necessary to maintain a safe dispensing environment for our patients and staff.

How can I quickly and safely pick up my products?
We strongly urge patients to pre-order and schedule a personal appointment to manage physical distancing requirements within the dispensary. Faster service is available if you pre-order and schedule a sales appointment online. Seniors may schedule special appointment times online or by calling (808) 866-7576.

What can I expect when I check in?
Upon check in, patients will be issued complimentary nitrile gloves to wear while in the dispensary. In addition, patients are required to apply complimentary sanitizer on their gloves before handling money.

If you are a walk-in patient, you will be offered the option of booking an appointment or, if you prefer to wait, you may do so in your car until notified by dispensary staff.

If I’m a walk-in patient waiting in my car, how will I know when I can enter?
You will receive a text when you may enter the dispensary.  Alternatively, a member of our staff will come to your car to alert you.

When you check-in you will receive a complimentary pair of nitrile gloves and a request to apply hand sanitizer. For your safety and that of our staff, patients are required to respect clear service area boundaries in our reception, education and sales rooms.

When may I go into the sales room?
To maintain required physical distancing and minimize interactions between patients and staff, we may serve patients in other areas within the dispensary, including the security window in the vestibule (the short hallway between the Reception Room and Education Room).

May I still pay with cash?
Yes. If paying with cash, you are required to use hand sanitizer on your gloves.  If you plan to use one of the ATMs, you will be required to pull on the gloves and apply the sanitizer first.

What about my senior/veteran discount?  Will I still need to shop only on Wednesdays to receive this?
No, we are extending your senior/veteran 20 percent discount to every day of the week through April 30, 2020.  To receive your discount, simply place a pre-order, online or call us at 808-866-7576. This will help to limit your time in the dispensary and minimize exposure to others.

Will I still earn points on my purhases? Can I use my vouchers?
Yes, you will receive points on all payments and we are accepting vouchers as usual.

What if I am quarantined, can you deliver?
No. We are seeking required government approvals to temporarily make deliveries to quarantined patients. We will alert patients if and when our request is approved.

Can my caregiver shop for me if I am sheltering in place?
Yes. Your caregiver has the same rights and protections as you do. Caregivers are required to check in with the same credentials as patients and follow the enhanced biosecurity requirements.

I don’t have a caregiver, can I add one now?
No. Adding a caregiver cannot presently be done online; paper documents are required for this process and DOH is unable to process them at this time.

My 329-card will expire soon and I’m afraid I won’t be able to see my medical provider for a renewal appointment. What can I do?If your card expires in March or April of 2020, you will automatically receive a 60-day extension; no action is required.  Cards expiring on March 31, 2020 are extended to May 31, 2020. Card expiring on April 30, 2020 are extended to June 30, 2020.  Renewals may be done using telehealth, so ask if your medical provider will re-certify you using Skype, Facetime or another telehealth method.

What is Maui Grown Therapies doing to help prevent community spread of COVID-19?
Our new required protocols include:
– Limiting time spent in the dispensary through pre-orders and sales appointments
– Asking patients to wait in the their vehicles until they may safely enter the dispensary
– Limiting occupancy throughout the dispensary and enforcing a six-foot buffer between individuals at all times
– Requiring patients and staff to use nitrile gloves and antibacterial gel for all transactions
– Moving all patient consultations to appointment by phone
– Using ozonation to disinfect all dispensary surfaces at night and operating hospital grade air purifiers during the day
– Ongoing disinfection of frequently-used dispensary surfaces

Are there any special considerations for medical cannabis use and COVID-19?
Yes, wash your hands thoroughly before touching your mouth, eyes or nose. Remember that dispensary products are for use only by the registered patient. Do not share pipes, bowls, vape pens and other methods of administration. Frequently clean cannabis devices with at least 60 percent isopropyl alcohol to ensure they’re sterile.

COVID-19 can survive for up to 24 hours on cardboard and up to three days on hard surfaces like glass, plastic or stainless steel.  If you must leave your home, wear protective gear, maintain at least six feet of distance from others and wash your hands thoroughly and frequently.

Is there anything else I should know?
Yes—seniors, especially those with underlying chronic medical conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes may be at higher risk for complications from COVID-19 illness. Please consult with your healthcare provider about additional steps you can take to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Finally, if you have a fever or are feeling unwell, please alert our staff before your arrival so we can make special arrangements to serve your needs.

Additional COVID-19 Protections

Good news! Weʻve added a few more ways to help to prevent COVID-19 community spread.

The health and safety of our patients and staff are Priority #1 for Maui Grown Therapies. We have made many changes to our operations for your protection and that of our dedicated staff. We are adding a few more ways to provide the safest possible dispensary experience for everyone.

Ozonation

In 2002, ozone gas was proven to kill SARS (another coronavirus), and there are strong indications it also eliminates SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes the COVID-19 disease).

Ozone is a naturally occurring gas created from oxygen atoms that is Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS) by the US Food and Drug Administration.  Ozone generators can safely make ozone from normal air and are commonly used as room disinfectants in hospitals.

We are using high-output ozone generators during times when the dispensary is closed. Our fully-trained operators will use this device to thoroughly disinfect all dispensary surfaces overnight.

Air Filtration

We also use hospital-grade air purifiers to constantly clean the air circulating throughout the dispensary during operating hours.  These air purifiers are equipped with HEPA-rated filters that capture and inactivate microbiological impurities, including virus particles.

These two new systems will will fortify our other mandatory sanitation protocols including:

  • Limiting time spent in the dispensary through pre-orders and sales appointments
  • Asking patients to wait in the their vehicles until they may safely enter the dispensary
  • Limiting occupancy in all dispensary rooms
  • Enforcing a six-foot buffer between individuals at all times
  • Ongoing disinfection of frequently-used dispensary surfaces
  • Requiring patients and staff to use nitrile gloves and antibacterial gel for all transactions
  • Moving all patient consulations to appointment by phone
  • Asking everyone to wear a mask while in the dispensary

We understand these adjustments have changed your dispensary experience and may seem excessive to some. However, it is our duty to safeguard the health and safety of our most vulnerable fellow islanders.  We deeply appreciate your cooperation, support and aloha during these extraordinary times.
